Funding Support & Advice

There are 4 elements to the Funding Support and Advice Service.

1. Information Dissemination

General information about available grant support is printed in the Threeway newsletter which is published quarterly.

  • The Funding News Service provides more specific and up-to-date information.
  • The Funding News Service is free of charge to registered subscribers.

2. Finding Finance

A computer program is used to identify the most likely sources of grant support. The program has information on more than 4,000 possible grant sources. The program is easy to use after initial instruction. A small charge is made to cover printing costs.

3. Advising Grant Applicants

Advice is provided to grant applicants free of charge on:-

  • Sources of grant finance
  • How to fill in the application form
  • Improvements to the draft application form

4. Training

Training is generally provided as part of the capacity building programme for the area. The main topics covered are:-

  • Preparing for Support - group organisation and project planning
  • Looking for Funding - sources of grant and how to identify them
  • Submitting Good Applications - what funders want and how to present it

Local Sources of grant funding

W.M. and B.W. Loyd Charity

The Charity supports the relief of poverty, education, medical purposes and social amenities. Poverty applications require a grant application form obtained from the contact (see below) and are only accepted via a third party (e.g. Citizen's Advice Bureau, health visitor, Social Services).

Beneficiaries must be residents of the old Borough of Darwen or those educated within the old Borough of Darwen (e.g. pupils at the local schools). Organisations based outside this area but which benefit Darwen residents are eligible (e.g. a hospice).

Grants are from £10 to £2,500.

Applications should be made by letter giving as much information as possible. Organisations should include a copy of their accounts. The trustees meet quarterly in March, June, September and December but emergency matters will be dealt with outside these meetings if the trustees feel it is appropriate.

John Leach Trust Fund

Grants are given for charitable purposes benefiting wholly or mainly the inhabitants of Darwen and adjoining villages including hospitals etc which serve the inhabitants of Darwen. Purposes qualifying for grant include:

The promotion of care for the elderly.
Education.
Medical equipment.
Improving parks and countryside.

Application is by letter see conatct below. Applications can be submitted at anytime - decisions take approx 8 weeks.

Daniel Thwaites Charitable Trust

Grants are made for specific items of equipment or towards specific events for the benefit of residents and organisations within a 50 mile radius of Blackburn. The Trust will not contribute towards general funds, i.e. running costs or major building or renovation work.

Typical grants are up to £1,000. In 2000/2001, over 30 awards of between £63 and £1,645 were made, totalling just over £29,000.

Applications should be made on the official application form available from the contact (see below). Applications are usually considered at quarterly meetings. Urgent applications can be dealt with immediately.
